Check valves

Effectively, they are like one-way signs. They will allow water to pass in one direction, but not flow in the other.

For most check valves, there are two semi-circle discs inside that are spring loaded. These discs will open in one direction, but will close when pressure falls below a specified level. When this pressure falls, a seal is created preventing the reverse flow of water.

Check valves prevent the irrigation system from draining, and also from going back to the water source, which is important when the water has been treated with chemicals.
